Particle board swells with minor moisture and sags in heat; thermofoil doors delaminate near self-cleaning ovens and sunny windows; and cheap hinges fail fast under 40-degree daily temperature swings.

Why the desert is hard on cabinets

Single-digit humidity dries and shrinks wood; monsoon weeks swing it back. West sun through a kitchen window bleaches stain and yellows cheap finishes. Attic-adjacent uppers see real heat. Cabinetry that performs identically to Ohio in a lab ages twice as fast here.

Boxes: plywood, full stop

Plywood holds fasteners through humidity cycles, shrugs off the dishwasher mishap that destroys particle board, and doesn’t sag under a stack of plates in year eight. It costs more per box. It’s the last place to save money.

Doors and finishes

Solid wood or MDF-core painted doors both work here when finished properly, the finish is the real question. Catalyzed conversion varnish or a factory UV-cured finish resists our sun; site-painted doors with wall paint do not, which is why so many DIY cabinet paint jobs in this valley chip within two years.

Hardware is not the place to economize

Doors get opened tens of thousands of times. Soft-close hinges and undermount slides from the major European makers survive that; no-name hardware is why kitchens rattle at year five.
