In Las Vegas, plywood cabinet boxes, UV-stable catalyzed finishes, and quality soft-close hardware outlast budget alternatives by a decade or more. Particle board swells with minor moisture and sags in heat; thermofoil doors delaminate near self-cleaning ovens and sunny windows; and cheap hinges fail fast under 40-degree daily temperature swings.
Why the desert is hard on cabinets
Single-digit humidity dries and shrinks wood; monsoon weeks swing it back. West sun through a kitchen window bleaches stain and yellows cheap finishes. Attic-adjacent uppers see real heat. Cabinetry that performs identically to Ohio in a lab ages twice as fast here.
Boxes: plywood, full stop
Plywood holds fasteners through humidity cycles, shrugs off the dishwasher mishap that destroys particle board, and doesn’t sag under a stack of plates in year eight. It costs more per box. It’s the last place to save money.
Doors and finishes
Solid wood or MDF-core painted doors both work here when finished properly, the finish is the real question. Catalyzed conversion varnish or a factory UV-cured finish resists our sun; site-painted doors with wall paint do not, which is why so many DIY cabinet paint jobs in this valley chip within two years.
Hardware is not the place to economize
Doors get opened tens of thousands of times. Soft-close hinges and undermount slides from the major European makers survive that; no-name hardware is why kitchens rattle at year five. We’ll show you the difference in the showroom, and the real cost gap between good and cheap hardware is smaller than most people expect.

Questions, answered.
Is thermofoil bad for Las Vegas kitchens?
It’s the most failure-prone door type here, heat from ovens and sunlight cause the vinyl skin to peel from the MDF core. If you’ve seen white doors with edges lifting, that’s thermofoil. We generally steer clients to painted MDF or wood instead.
Do wood cabinets crack in desert dryness?
Solid-wood panels move with humidity; properly built doors use floating panels to allow it. Cracking comes from poor construction or finishes that trap the panel, not from wood being wrong for the desert.
What finish holds up to Las Vegas sun?
Factory-applied catalyzed or UV-cured finishes. If a quote says doors will be painted on site, ask what product and what warranty covers fading and chipping.
